Winter Wonderland

We woke up this morning to a beautiful, snowy, winter wonderland and I LOVE IT!!!

I am sitting on our couch, listening to Christmas music, the tree lights are glowing, Camden is happily kicking in his little kicky chair and the snow continues to gently fall outside.

Scott is outside stoking the furnace. Even though we live in a dorm, we still get to enjoy the country lifestyle. Our whole building is heated with wood, cut from our own campus wood lot and split and stacked by students.
This is the view from our kitchen window...

This snow storm is coming on the heels of a terrible ice storm that wrecked the area just one week ago. Some neighbors and local friends are still without power!

Here is my parent's backyard the morning after the ice storm!

A tree in front of our house...

But despite the wintery weather, we have been keeping warm and cozy with family and friends. Scott's parents came over to Andover for a day and celebrated an early Christmas with my side of the family.

Here's Pop (Scott's dad) reading to Camden in front of my parents' tree...

My little niece, Clara, was having a blast...

Camden continues to bring us such joy. Here are a few recent pictures that always make us smile...

He now weighs 16 lbs 10 oz (65th percentile) and is 27 inches long (off the charts!!!).

He is healthy and such a happy little boy. We couldn't ask for anything more.

Blessings to you all this Christmas season...

Happy Thanksgiving!

So, I originally wrote this blog on Thanksgiving Day, but for some reason it didn't get posted until now. Oops! Oh well, it's always good to remember the things we are thankful for!

Some of the things I am thankful for today:

- My incredible, loving, husband and my beautiful, healthy baby boy

- Pumpkin Pie and Vanilla Ice Cream

- My Mom and Daddy

- Fires in the fireplace

- The opportunity for me to stay home with Camden

- Turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes

- Ellen and...

Jon & Kate Plus Eight

- Our cute little apartment up on the hill

- Best friends

- My sister and her family

- The ability that I once had to play soccer and basketball (we'll see if I ever do that again!)

- Afternoon naps curled up with Camden

- Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

- Peter Christians Tavern

- The health of my friends and family

This is a very short, and very random, list but I really do have so much to be thankful for at this time in my life...I am very blessed.

Vaccinations

It is amazing how many major decisions need to be made regarding raising your child. It goes far beyond how you are going to decorate his nursery, what cute outfits you're going to dress him in, and whether you should buy the Baby Bjorn or the Ergo baby carrier. And these major decisions come long before you are worrying about curfews, driver's licenses and girlfriends. From the moment your child is born, you are faced with difficult decisions that impact the rest of their lives. One of the most difficult that Scott and I have been faced with since Camden's birth in August is the decision surrounding vaccinations.

There is a great amount of fear surrounding this topic and you can barely turn on the news or watch the Ellen show without seeing a breaking news story or a celebrity speaking on the controversial issue. There is fear if you DO vaccinate your child - some studies show a possible link between vaccines and autism, the danger of aluminum and mercury in vaccines, side effects after getting shots that range from discomfort, fussiness and fever to seizures and even death! There is also fear if you choose NOT to vaccinate your child - what if your child catches polio or another horrible disease? What about the public health standpoint?

I have done a good amount of reading on this topic and still do not feel settled about it. If you are interested in learning more about vaccines, I recommend reading The Vaccine Book by Dr. Robert Sears. Unlike many books regarding this topic, this is not an "anti-vaccine" book, but rather seeks to educate the reader so that they can make the best choice for their family. The author breaks down each disease and corresponding vaccine into a chapter and covers how common/rare (and how serious) each disease is, how each vaccine is made and what ingredients in it might be controversial, what the side effects might be etc... I found the book to be extremely helpful in answering many of my questions, and although I don't feel completely settled, I do feel more educated.

After much discussion with friends and family and a lot of reading, we have found a schedule that we are relatively at peace with. Dr. Sears suggests a schedule that gets children fully vaccinated, but does so in a way that minimizes the theoretical risks of vaccines. We just went to the pediatrician today, and Camden got two shots. It is so hard for me as a mother to see my baby smiling up into my face one second and then crying in pain the next. I know this process will never feel completely right and will definitely never be easy, but hopefully we have made the best choice for our family.

This post may seem random to many of you, but as parents of a small child it has been weighing on our minds for months now and I often feel better after I write about something that is difficult for me. It is my prayer that we can look back on these decisions down the road and feel confident in the path we took.

On a happier note, our little guy is growing like a weed and is already 15 lbs, 7 oz!!! That's pretty big for a 14 week old!! :) He is smiling, grabbing things, starting to laugh and is just the joy of our lives.

Halloween

Camden has had a lot of firsts recently. He witnessed his first snowfall on Wednesday, has started reaching out and grabbing toys for the first time, and yesterday he experienced his first Halloween. I have to say, I wasn't really anticipating just how much fun it would be to have a baby on Halloween. I haven't really celebrated this "holiday" (if you can call it that) for many years now. As a child I would get dressed up and go trick-or-treating around the neighborhood. I remember dumping all the candy out on the living room floor when we got home and trading all my chocolate for candy I actually liked from my sister. Then I would stash away my candy in my room, only allowing myself to have a piece once in a while, but never sharing with anyone else. I would usually be forced to throw it all away around Easter time when I realized it was too hard to eat anymore. (I've always been really good at saving things and not sharing - but I'm working on being a better sharer now that I'm older!). Here's a picture of Scott and his brothers from their childhood...

Scott and I have talked about how we're going to celebrate holidays now that we have a child in our lives. Are we going to let him dress up and trick-or-treat for Halloween? (We are, but we're going to limit his candy intake and keep our fingers crossed that he'll always want to dress up in cute costumes, rather than scary costumes...we don't like all the scary/evil parts of Halloween). Are we going to encourage a belief in Santa Clause or just focus on the true meaning of Christmas? Are we going to dye Easter eggs and have a Easter egg hunt even though eggs have nothing to do with Jesus' resurrection? We both agree that we want Camden to enjoy his childhood and we want to pass along all of the fun traditions we had with our families, while making sure that he is taught the real meaning behind these holidays as well.

Needless to say, we had a great time celebrating Halloween with our little one yesterday. Even though he will have no recollection of the day, I will always have fun memories of getting him dressed up in his little pea pod costume and joining the school's child care/pre-school kids on a little costume parade around town! It was adorable to see the kids treated to candy at the public library, the town hall offices, the little store in town, the doctor's office, and many of the buildings on our own campus. It made me so glad to live in a small town and see what a strong community we are raising our family in.

We even went trick-or-treating to a few houses with Camden's little friend, Jordan. (Camden is 12 weeks old today and Jordan is 3 weeks old today!) They're going to be little buddies!

We truly had a great day and it just got me so excited for all the incredible traditions and memories we are going to create in the future. We are so blessed.

soccer

Soccer has been a huge part of my life since I started playing seriously when I was in middle school. I played every fall through high school and every spring on a club team. I went on to play in college and after graduating played for a summer in North Carolina and have played indoor soccer in the winters and coached every fall...until I got pregnant. For the first time in my life, I went 9+ months without real competition, and I had no idea how difficult that would be for me! There's something about having a ball at my feet that is so natural. When I am on a field, I feel a sense of peace and contentment that I don't find many other places. (Don't worry, God and family and friends all bring me greater peace and contentment and joy...but just work with me here.) Soccer has been a physical and an emotional outlet for me for so many years and it has been so tough to sit on the sidelines and watch over the last year or so. After going through such a difficult labor with Camden, I honestly went through a time when I couldn't even imagine myself running again, let alone kicking, sliding, pushing, jumping, falling and everything else that happens in soccer. Nobody warned me of the intense pain and recovery that I would have to go through following delivery. Of course you're as prepared as you can possibly be for birth (you KNOW that's going to be painful), but I had no idea how difficult the next couple months would be on my body. Just this last week, the girls varsity soccer team that I helped coach the last two years asked if I could scrimmage with them because they needed more numbers. Although Camden is now 11 weeks old (!!!) I had not really participated in any real physical activity other than lots of long walks, so I was very nervous to accept this invitation. But, my desire to be competitive and active overrode my fears of the physical pain I might feel, and I PLAYED SOCCER AGAIN! It felt so wonderful to be out there, running and kicking and shooting and having so much fun once again. I finally feel like a "real" person again! Of course I was so sore that I couldn't walk without feeling the burn in my quads for about three days, but it was so wonderful to be active. Now I'm looking at playing indoor this winter and am excited for the Alumni Basketball game at Gordon in a couple weeks! It's nice to know that having a baby doesn't keep you on the couch recovering for the rest of your life! But even if it did, and I never played soccer again, Camden would be completely worth it. He's the love of our life now and overrules all of our old passions. It's funny how your priorities change when you have a child...

A Whole New World

As you know, this post has been a very long time coming! There are many reasons for this delay. My days are now filled with changing diapers, nursing, singing lullabies, holding my beautiful baby boy and getting used to motherhood. Very rarely do I find the time to sit down and actually have both of my hands free to type on the computer. Another reason for my delay in posting is that I have been working on writing down my labor story. It is a story that will go down in history as one of the most painful labor experiences in the world (at least that’s how I like to see it!), but after spending hours typing out every detail, I realized that most of you aren’t really interested in when my water broke (9:00am Friday August 8th) and the fact that I experienced the dreaded “back labor” for my entire labor, or how many hours I had to push for (a total of five hours!) and when our sweet little Camden actually arrived (7:49 pm Saturday August 9th). The simple things that you probably do care to read about, like the fact that he is a beautiful, healthy baby boy, that he weighed 9 pounds even and was 21 inches long, and that he is the love of our lives, could have been posted months ago. Needless to say, I’ve given up on sharing my entire labor story with you all (ask me if you want details, otherwise I’ll spare you the long story) and have decided to continue posting smaller, more manageable posts to keep you all up to date with our busy, but wonderful, lives.

I do want to say one thing though...and that is that I couldn’t have survived labor and delivery without Scott’s endless love and support throughout the painful process.

He never left my side, and although it was difficult for him to see me in such a pitiful state, he never waivered. He was right by my side, helping me through each and every contraction, giving me encouragement and helping me be strong. I’m a very lucky young woman to have such an amazing husband! I also don’t think either of us could have survived without the presence of my sister, Caren. She served as an unofficial doula for me, wiping my forehead with washcloths, helping me through contractions and making suggestions to try and ease the pain. She was a rock, and really helped me and Scott in more ways than she will ever know.

I'm hoping that eventually the memories of the unbearable pain and the long recovery process will fade (people swear to me that you forget about these things - but I haven't yet!), but the one thing I know will never leave my memory is the incredible feeling of relief, joy and love that swept over me the moment Camden finally arrived and was placed on my chest. It's a feeling that is hard to describe with words, a feeling that I think only a mother can feel for her newborn child, a feeling that although I have not forgotten the pain of childbirth, somehow makes every last second of it worth it. This child is truly a gift, a miracle that we will always treasure.

Camden is already 9 ½ weeks old and has changed SO MUCH in the short time he’s been alive! He is cooing and making so many noises, smiling, interacting with us and is just so much fun to be around. He really is a good baby. He cries when he’s hungry (if he wakes up from a nap hungry, you’d better watch out…he makes his wishes known to the whole world!), or if he has a dirty diaper, or sometimes when he’s just so tired, but can’t calm down enough to fall asleep. But we have learned that this is just how he communicates with us! We’re learning the difference between his hungry cry and his gassy cry and do our best to meet his needs before he gets too worked up. It seems as though his favorite time of day is about 5:00 in the morning! He usually wakes up to feed around that time and just doesn’t really want to go back to sleep. Instead he sits up in bed, leaning against our knees, and coos and smiles the biggest smiles! Despite our complete and utter exhaustion, Scott and I can’t help but laugh and enjoy this special time with our son. Here's a picture of him at about 4:30am...

Our life has changed greatly in the last couple months, but we couldn't be happier with all that God has blessed us with! Keep checking the blog for updates (I promise to be more consistent from now on!).

One more week to go!!!

The last month has been a very full one! We've officially moved into an AMAZING new apartment on campus! We have beautiful wood floors, an incredible view, much more privacy and peace and quiet than our old apartment had and we just feel so blessed to be living here now!

Here's a picture of our little set up. We sit on our couch and look out the big sliding glass doors that overlook the campus and the mountain! And the best part...we have two stories to ourselves and no students overhead! YAY!!!!!

Here are a couple pictures of our view...

Along with moving, we've had a chance to spend some extra time with friends and family! We had a blast having our dear friends Courtney and Adam and their little girl Annabelle out to Scott's parent's place on Lake George.

Annabelle is a little snugglebug!

Me and Court enjoying the beautiful lake...

The Maggs!

A classic...

I was a bit nervous that my extra weight might break the hammock...but we survived!

Playing Backgammon on the dock at Lake George...

The three of us!

Last week, Scott and I hiked the mountain!

Being silly...

38 weeks!

My sister and me with our hubbies at a family gathering...

We went back to Lake George for a final visit before little JoJo arrives last week.

Although the sun is setting on one era of our lives, we are so excited to face the future together and see all that God has in store for us and our growing family!
